Here is a great recipe that I tried last night.

Apple Pandowdy

Dowdy: a person with a shabby appearance
This PA Dutch dessert is like an apple pie but missing the bottom crust and with the top crust broken with a “dowdy” look to it.

Pandowdy

Crust

1.5 cups flour
.5 tsp. salt
.5 cup shortening
3-4 tbsp. cold water

Filling

1 tsp. cinnamon
.25 tsp. nutmeg
.25 tsp. cloves
.25 tsp. salt
9 Medium apples, peeled and cut into slim slices (I used Jonagolds)
1/2 cup light molasses (I substituted maple syrup)

Instructions

Make the crust, roll into a ball and chill while you make the filling. Mix spices with the apples, put into a buttered pan, pour the molasses over top and dot the apples with butter. Roll out the crust, place on top and bake for 10 min at 400 degrees then turn it down to 350 for another 30 minutes. Server warm (and with vanilla ice cream).
